The first Saturday of the York season will see us welcome back families, with accompanied under 16’s being admitted free of charge. A spring Saturday at York always offers a great atmosphere as people enjoy the award winning facilities and take in the exciting action on the course.

The Stowe Family Law LLP Grand Cup, is a Listed race, which means it will be won by a horse of real quality; last year’s winner, Times Up, went on to be placed in two Group races and win another Listed. It’s likely that twenty thoroughbreds will hurtle down the home straight in the feature sprint, the sportingbet.com Stakes; being close to such a spectacle is always a treat. Last year’s victor, Masamah, returned here to win a Listed race during the John Smith’s Cup Meeting and went on to win a Group 2 during Glorious Goodwood.

Sport Relief stars in York

England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales will be represented by teams composed of stars from sport and TV undertaking a 1,000 mile challenge – each team running the final mile through the city of York finishing at the Eye of York for an overnight stay.
As part of Sports Relief 2012, four national teams will start the race simultaneously from their home cities of Cardiff, Dublin, Edinburgh and London and will head off clockwise around the UK and Ireland via the other four capital cities as they battle to be the First Nation Home.

Participants include top TV presenters and celebrities Gethin Jones, celebrity gardener Diarmuid Gavin, presenters Andrea MacLean, Phil Spencer and Craig Doyle, actress and model Gemma Atkinson, Olympians Sonia O’Sullivan, Iwan Thomas and Chris Boardman, Dame Ellen MacArthur and rugby stars Thom Evans, Josh Lewsey and star of Big Brother, Gareth Thomas. Scotland arrive on 10^th, Ireland 13^th, Wales 15^th and England 16^th March. Join the Civic Party and give them a good Yorkshire welcome!

He was the most popular X-Factor contestant last year, being beaten only once in the weekly voting numbers. The Bootleg Beatles – Sunday 18th March The Bootleg Beatles’ reputation for performing the most authentic and entertaining Beatles show in the world is richly deserved. York Races: Dante Festival

Why not take a trip to York racesat the start of spring for a catchup with friends.

York in May is a fantastic place to come racing, the race season lies ahead and many star horses have risen to prominence at this event in the last few years.

Highlights of the Dante Festival in previous years have included Sariska, winning the Tattersalls Musidora in 2009 which is held on the opening day of the festival, going on to win both the English and Irish Oaks. The top horses from the action on Friday will often reappear in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, as the leading stayers take centre stage in the Yorkshire Cup. Last year’s winner, Duncan, went on to win the Group One, Irish Field St.Leger.

The winners at this year’s festival will again be the ones to watch throughout the season.

The new York season offers many racegoers a chance to meet up with friends that they might not see over the winter. The scent of newly mown grass and freshly planted flowers around the racecourse add to the sense of new beginnings and there is a definite buzz in the air. Each day the punters’ panel at 1pm will mark your card and you can listen to the band playing from the Weighing Room Lawn.

York Chocolate Festival 6th to 9th April 2012

As part of York 800, the city is hosting its first ever Chocolate Festival has had a long and distinguished history with the confectionery and chocolate industry, even back in 1781 the city boasted 8 confectioners for its 17,000 inhabitants. Today the Nestle Chocolate Factory still creates a million Kit Kats a day, whilst the city has a pungent, comforting smell of dark chocolate lingering over it on roasting days. Many of York’s population have had family that once worked in the confectionery dynasties of Rowntree, Terrys and Cravens, and everyone has a lasting memory of their favourite chocolate bar, many of which were created in our fair city.

Join us Friday 6th to Monday 9th April 2012 as York becomes transformed into a Chocolate City and the industry, chocolate lovers, artisan chocolatiers, museums and attractions share a piece of York’s chocolate history.

Bringing together some of the UK’s top experts in the paranormal and supernatural and using some of the UK’s most historic buildings, streets and snickleways, Spooksfest promises to be a fun, fearful and fascinating weekend.

Hear about the ghosts and gory history of York with the world famous ghost walks and meet the local ‘spirits’ on a Haunted Pub Crawl. Discover the darker secrets of the Mansion House, home to the Lord Mayor of York, by candlelight on a spooky stories tour, or perhaps visit City Screen for spine-tingling horror movies!

On Saturday spend an evening with Dr Ciaran O’Keefe., TV parapsychologist, known for his appearances on “Most Haunted”, in the Historic Treasurers House, home to one of the most famous ghost stories in the UK.

Jorvik Viking Festival

The JORVIK Viking Festival is a long-established festival in York, celebrating it’s Viking heritage.

The Festival sees hundreds of Vikings descend on the city and demonstrate battle-drills and training routines. The city is also treated to a range of public events including lectures, arts & crafts, encampments, river events, saga-telling, and full-scale battle re-enactments. Fun for all the family.

Jorvik viking centre is right in the bustling City Centre of York and is only a short trip from Cumbria House Bed and Breakfast by Bus, Car or even a nice stroll through York scenic streets.

The 2012 JORVIK Viking Festival will take place from 11 - 19 February 2012.
